Idealist.org 05/29/2010
![]() If you're reading my blog, you surely already know about Idealist.org. If not, stop reading this and go there. What I wanted to say is that they have some books out as well. The Idealist Handbook to Building a Better World is a great resource to keep in your office, especially if you work with young adults. It's the kind of book that you want to say "Steal This Book" about... if you're old enough to know what I mean!! This is your new blog post. Click here and start typing, or drag in elements from the top bar. Add Comment Medshare 05/28/2010
It's very inspiring to read about organizations that are dealing with a specific aspect of healthcare. Medshare was an early favorite of mine because of their brilliant plan to bridge the gap between medical surplus and need. On their Critical Need Alert page they highlight a hospital each month. This month is Kirker Hospital in Niger--where only one third of the population has access to healthcare and 25% of children die before the age of five due to diseases and malnutrition. They are sending this hospital a 40-foot container filled with medical supplies and equipment. You snooze, you lose 05/27/2010
![]() Don't forget to give today. Remember Give Time or Money adds sites each day. Visit often, please! And also please send suggestions. Thank you! ![]() When I first clicked on the website of Trees For Life I naturally assumed it was about planting trees in needy areas. And that's how it started in the 1980's. But like a tree, this organization has grown steadily in many different directions. The founder is sure that knowledge and working together are the keys for growth. I liked the very simple Trees For Life Pledge. I also like that they have virtual opportunities to volunteer and also internships. This is an organization to keep an eye on and remember for a time in your life when you have both time and money, because working with them would be very interesting and rewarding. This is good? Puppies Behind Bars 05/26/2010
![]() An emphatic YES. Visit the website to see what Puppies Behind Bars is about. I have to rate this one as Win Win Win because it covers a lot of bases quite neatly. Yet another creative idea! PlanUSA 05/24/2010
![]() PlanUSA is a great cause and I love some of the features on their website. You have to check out their Visit A Village page. I'd also love to hear suggestions of other sites that are using technology in unique and effective ways. Games That Give 05/24/2010
I have been noticing that San Francisco seems to be the birthplace of some really innovative charities and ideas for giving. Probably one of the most enticing sites for giving is GamesThatGive. I challenge you to visit this site and not get hooked. That's why it is in the one hour category of Give Time or Money. The idea is similar to that of FreeRice, and when you play games here you you can choose a charity to donate your "time" to and 70% of the ad revenue will go to that charity. Is it a huge donation that you are making here? No. But if you're sitting at your computer aimlessly surfing or wasting time, you might as well play a game at this site. Great concept! Bolder Giving 05/24/2010
![]() I have just added Bolder Giving to the Resource section. Lots of food for thought here and some different kinds of resources. Room To Read 05/20/2010
I'm a librarian... what can I say... of course I love this one! Room To Read works in rural areas of Asia and Africa to establish libraries and opportunities to read. "World Change starts with educated children." Just the name makes me want to smile 05/18/2010
