There is a lot to read on the website for Women's Rights Partnership. Dig in... good stuff here!

Microfinancing to end global poverty. In short, that is what the Grameen Foundation is about. Can you give $27 a month? Or once, even? That's what started this whole venture. Read all about it here.

Who protects the earth? Did you ever consider that the earth might need a lawyer... or a crew of lawyers? The motto of EarthJustice is "because the earth needs a good lawyer." Their mission is to protect the earth and to defend the right of people to live in a healthy environment. They maintain a list of petitions that you can sign after you have finished reading about what is needed to preserve our surroundings. They've been at it since 1971 and have a significant track record.

You're already sitting at your computer so please spend slightly less than 15 minutes today by watching a video from Free The Slaves. The website has a lot of options on it for both action and education, and I suspect you'll find something more you will want to do. Modern day slavery is an issue we don't know enough about. Watching this video will be a great way to spend your fifteen minutes, and then you can take it from there. This one is an eye-opener.

I just added this book to the Resources page. I haven't finished reading it yet, but am really enjoying it! Lots of opportunities to do good through quilting here.

This one does require a skill. If you sew, keep reading. If you have a sewing machine, keep reading. If not, go explore another page on the site. For those who sew, I want to introduce you to Quilts for Kids. I just started learning to quilt a couple of weeks ago and I already feel like I could do this one. It might not take a month, but that's the turn around time they are asking. Take a look at the site, check if there is a local chapter for you. If not, click here. They will send you much of what you need! You will get the joy of creating the quilt, and a needy child will be comforted by it. Fun and worthy!!

Giving ROCKS!! 07/16/2010

This is a picture of my dad. He is a surgeon. He is a teacher. He is a great guy who has given a lot to the world. This weekend my sister is giving something back to my dad (and mom) by taking them for a wonderful weekend in the country. It's not as hard as you think to give something everyday.
PS. My dad loves to eat.
He is mostly wheelchair-bound now and my mother is doing a great job giving him all care.
PPS. Thanks, Beth!! Thanks to everyone else who is giving care to aging parents!!

Just added Child Aid in the $500 category. They are working in South America to to give children of the rural indigenous poor a fair chance in life. They have been doing this for twenty years and they partner with local organizations to be as effective as they can. Your money will go far there. Their website is colorful and informative. If you're a librarian you will be tempted to want to go there and help! (Says the librarian....)

Dorot is an organization for helping seniors. It's in New York City. I've added them to the thirty minute category because they have a project where you make a birthday card, send it to them, and they send it to a frail and isolated senior. This could be a great activity to do with kids on a rainy day, or with a youth group etc. Or just make one yourself and send it to them. Why not? A thirty minute break to do something creative is fun and invigorating.

Women Thrive comes up with another great campaign

I can't even imagine why anyone wouldn't do this. Click here to read about the 31 days of action to take to support Women Thrive's efforts to pass the International Violence Against Women Act. There is a Facebook page here.
