Lemon-Aid Stand!! 06/11/2010
When's the last time you had a lemonade stand? This could be a great family activity, or fun to set up anywhere on a hot day. Blood:Water Mission is an organization working to empower communities in Africa to work together against the HIV/AIDS and water crises. This is a really sweet idea--and they set you up with all the materials to run the stand and educate folks. Get in touch with your inner child and have a great day to support this organization and your neighbors in Africa! Add Comment Medshare 05/28/2010
It's very inspiring to read about organizations that are dealing with a specific aspect of healthcare. Medshare was an early favorite of mine because of their brilliant plan to bridge the gap between medical surplus and need. On their Critical Need Alert page they highlight a hospital each month. This month is Kirker Hospital in Niger--where only one third of the population has access to healthcare and 25% of children die before the age of five due to diseases and malnutrition. They are sending this hospital a 40-foot container filled with medical supplies and equipment. Just the name makes me want to smile 05/18/2010

Action for Healthy Kids has a four-star rating and Charity Navigator and their site is set up in a very user-friendly way. There seems to be tons of information here as well as opportunities to donate both time and money. It was a dilemma to figure out what category to put it in and I may go back to it. Stop TB Partnership is connected with the World Health Organization. I bet many of you have never met someone with tuberculosis. I have. She had to take special medication for about a year. She was fine. But she was lucky to have easy access to that medication. Many don't and many die from TB... still. So this is a good place to put your $20. A nice website with lots of information, too. |
